36. Georges Seurat - A Corner of the Harbour of Honfleur, 1886

The harbour views Seurat painted on the French Channel coast in the summers of 1885 until 1892 are among the top pieces of the museum. In his own time they were also highly appreciated. The Belgian poet and art historian Emile Verhaeren for instance writes in a review: ‘Seurat’s triumph are his sea and landscapes.’ Verhaeren is also the first owner of ‘Harbour entrance at Honfleur’. It is a gift from the artist himself.
