Falls the Shadow

‘Falls the Shadow’ is an artwork by New Zealander Helen Pollock, whose father fought in the First World War. The artwork is made out of clay from both Zonnebeke and New Zealand, and it commemorates the many men who were not killed in the fighting but drowned in the sea of mud around Ypres. The outstretched arms symbolize the men’s senseless sacrifice, but at the same time they amount to a plea for a different world. They represent strength, new growth and the indestructibility of the human spirit. It is a powerful symbol of peace and rebirth.
