Take a good look at the clock on the wall. Wait until the counter reaches zero before you go into the next room. In this immersive exhibition we explain to you the course of events at the front during the Battle of Passchendaele. The Battle of Passchendaele took place in three phases. Each fresh attack was preceded by immense logistical preparations and monstrous shelling. On the map table you can see how the offensive developed. The counter shows the vast human toll as compared to the minimal amount of territory gained. Historical photographs allow us to form an impression of the colossal suffering and destruction around Zonnebeke. You can see how each attack ran aground in the devastated landscape or came up against strong German resistance. What was once intended as an Allied breakthrough to the coast eventually ended in a long, exhausting battle for Passchendaele.
