Haig's train compartment

The British and French were determined to win the war by attacking, but they could not agree on how. France wanted to take back its occupied territory, while the British wanted to drive the Germans from the coast by means of a breakthrough in Flanders. The latter idea had been on the mind of British commander-in-chief Douglas Haig for some time. The attack would take place on a broad front, with targets deep inside German territory. He took little account of the German defences. Have a good look inside his train carriage. Scan the audio point next to his desk to discover how Haig wanted to bring about a breakthrough in Flanders.
