21. Joyce’s Shorter Works

In addition to his major works, Joyce also wrote some shorter prose works, including book reviews and articles for newspapers, private correspondence, and notebooks, many of which have been published since his death. Joyce started writing book reviews for the Daily Express in 1903 when he went to Paris and he continued writing them for about a year. While living in Trieste he wrote articles in Italian for the local newspaper, Il Piccolo della Sera, writing mainly on Irish subjects, particularly Irish politics. Three volumes of Joyce’s correspondence have been published since his death and give some insight into his life and work. One letter, which he wrote to his grandson Stephen, has since been published as a children’s book called The Cat and the Devil.
