16. Joyce’s homes/Joyce the exile

Mainly as a result of John Joyce’s drinking, the Joyce family often had to change address, so that by 1904 Joyce had lived at seventeen different addresses in Dublin, and in his later life he kept up this constant moving from place to place. This room gives an impression of the kind of places Joyce lived while working on Ulysses. Joyce started writing Ulysses in Trieste in 1914 but, because of the war, he moved to Zurich in 1915. He returned to Trieste in October 1919 and, in July 1920, he moved to Paris where he lived for twenty years. But Joyce often moved from one apartment to another, so that living at rue de l’Université in Paris in November 1920, he claimed it was the twentieth address at which he had worked on Ulysses – and he lived at another three addresses in Paris before Ulysses was published in 1922.
