09 Two profession of vows crowns

Artefacts such as these crowns – worn when young nuns professed their vows – testify to another way of becoming one with Christ: instead of suffering, they focussed on love, mystical love. The idea of mystical love originates in the Song of Songs, an Old Testament text that celebrates the love between a bride and a groom. Already back in early Christianity this text was being taken to be an allegory for the mystical love between Christ and His bride: the human soul. Nuns longed for such a spiritual union and they sealed it with a mystical marriage to Christ. The box of cut rings are a moving testimony to this.
