05 Christ Carrying the Cross

A little farther along we see the painting Christ Carrying the Cross. Such depictions of Jesus on His way to Calvary have always been a very popular theme in religious painting. In this version, we see Jesus’s upper body, with the heavy wooden cross resting on His shoulder. In the background, one of the criminals who is to be crucified alongside Jesus is brutally pushed onward by a soldier. It was painted by Michiel Coxcie, who is rightly regarded as one of the most influential 16th-century artists. His balanced compositions, his bold colouration, and the innovative poses of his figures set him apart from contemporaries. He is a bridge between the art of the Flemish Primitives and that of the Italian Renaissance. This long forgotten Christ Carrying the Cross was rediscovered during an inventory of the Redemptorist Fathers of Jette collection, carried out by the Culture Centre for Religious Art.
