25 Prayer book

To help them to follow the Mass, which used to be in Latin, believers could rely on their prayer book. It contains the readings, epistles and hymns of the Sunday Mass, often with the texts in both Latin and Dutch. This prayer book belonged to a certain Simone Delaruelle, from the Broekstraat, which is right opposite Park Abbey. Prayer cards were often used as bookmarks. This prayer book contains several. One of them is a prayer card to Saint Norbert, Park Abbey’s patron saint. In 1120, in Prémontré in France, this Norbert founded a new monastic order, the Premonstratensians, or Norbertines. During the 12th century, several other Norbertine abbeys were founded, among them our own Park Abbey. At the request of Godfrey the Bearded, Count of Leuven, the Abbot of Laon, sent a number of Norbertines to Heverlee. The Duke put his hunting park at their disposal and in 1129 the Parcum Dominorum, the Abbey of the Park, was born.

PARCUM

In our museum you will find thematic exhibitions at the confluence of religion, art and culture. Exhibitions that bring you face to face with the often unseen heritage of our churches, abbeys and monasteries. In today's multi-religious and highly diverse society, particular attention is paid here to promoting dialogue. Our exhibitions do not provide answers; they encourage thinking and dialogue. PARCUM is much more than a museum. It is also a visit to one of the best preserved abbey complexes in the Benelux.
