22 Lier Rosary Procession 1899 sketch

Catholic Flanders has a long and rich tradition of processions, parades and circumambulations. This sketch here depicts the entire Rosary Procession held in Lier in 1899. The procession represents the Mysteries of the Rosary, which originally consisted of five ‘joyful’, five ‘sorrowful’ and five ‘glorious’ mysteries. These Mysteries are like a summary of the Gospels. Events relating to the life of Mary, whose focus was Jesus, play a central role. Praying the rosary was – and still is – seen as a powerful prayer for the intercession of the Virgin Mary. According to the legend, the first rosary was given to Saint Dominic in the 13th century by the Virgin Mary herself. In the 16th century, October was declared rosary month. In Flanders, this has given rise to numerous rosary processions, including this one in Lier. With its precise representation of all the different groups, different types of clothing and attributes, this sketch is a valuable testament to the processional tradition in Flanders and in particular to the Rosary Procession in Lier.
