21 ‘Cage-doll’ processional statue

Stripped of its robes, this statue reveals itself in its purest form. It is a ‘cage-doll’ or ‘frame’ statue. In such statues, only visible body parts, such as the head and hands, are carved or moulded. The rest of the ‘body’ consists of a core of wooden slats and cardboard. Such statues had to be light because they were made to be carried in processions, fittingly adorned in beautiful robes and precious gems. Clad only in its undergarment, this statue gives us a pure, almost intimate glimpse of how it was used. Mary's and Jesus' undergarments are particularly delicate and each time they were dressed it was done with the greatest care and dedication. The statues would then be venerated and carried in procession. Now once again undressed, this pure, honest and serene statue is a poignant testament to that recurring ritual.

PARCUM

In our museum you will find thematic exhibitions at the confluence of religion, art and culture. Exhibitions that bring you face to face with the often unseen heritage of our churches, abbeys and monasteries. In today's multi-religious and highly diverse society, particular attention is paid here to promoting dialogue. Our exhibitions do not provide answers; they encourage thinking and dialogue. PARCUM is much more than a museum. It is also a visit to one of the best preserved abbey complexes in the Benelux.
