210 - Be the Change - Human Rights Advocates

FEMALE NARRATOR In every nation on earth ordinary people stand up for human rights wherever they see a need. People teach in slums where it’s dangerous and teach girls where it’s not allowed. Doctors, nurses, and aid workers treat injured people in war zones and sick people in refugee camps. Lawyers fight for freedom of expression in totalitarian regimes where speaking out might mean imprisonment, or worse, execution. Everywhere, activists speak out for people who are vulnerable, marginalized, or who can’t speak for themselves. Everywhere, people just like us take action to make sure everyone’s human rights are protected. Some of these people risk their freedom and physical safety. Others risk ridicule and the consequences of standing up against cultural norms or political power. Every time we advance freedom of speech or freedom of belief, we advance human rights. Every time we act, no matter how big or how small, to ensure freedom from fear and poverty, we protect those rights for everyone. Every life saved; every child educated; every person healed; every political prisoner freed. To stand up for human rights anywhere is to stand for human rights everywhere.
