209 - Be the Change - Rigoberta Menchú

FEMALE NARRATOR The following segment is from a 2004 speech presented at the University of California Santa Barbara where Dr. Rigoberta Menchú spoke on the continuing struggles of indigenous peoples. RIGOBERTA MENCHÚ INTERPRETER So what kind of a world do we want for the future? We want a world with human dignity. We want a world where we respect one another’s cultures. We want a world where there’s no drought, where there’s water available, where people can breathe, where people can coexist. We want a world where people do not have to face the dangers of violence. We want the world the future generations will develop. We are but passing through this world and when we leave this world the question in our minds is what kind of world did I leave behind? Did I leave a world that I helped to build or did I live a life where I helped to destroy. And so that’s what we need. To choose against destruction, to choose to build and not to destroy.
