203 - Be the Change - Who Stood Up for Human Rights?

FEMALE NARRATOR In every war, for every violation of human rights and human dignity, someone has always stood up. They stood up for the oppressed. They spoke out to the masses. They marched for their principles and they argued for their cases. They used the courts and media to influence public opinion. Many of these people were publicly mocked and shamed for what they said and did. Some were even killed. But thanks to their hard work, millions of people now live better lives. And thousands of people, maybe more, who could have died or been thrown in jail are alive and free. Each person shown in this exhibit answered the call in their time and place. Civil rights; women’s rights; children’s rights; worker’s rights; human rights. None of these people are super-human. None of them were rich or famous before they started standing up for other people. They may have been great speakers or writers, but it wasn’t their personalities or their traits that made a difference; it was their actions. In every case, they took action, over and over again, and changed the world. Take a few minutes and read about the people represented here then, if you’d like, listen to selections from their speeches.
