201 - Be the Change - What are Human Rights?

FEMALE NARRATOR The fundamental truth of human rights are that those rights belong to you. MALE NARRATOR Article One –All humans are born with the same dignity and rights. FEMALE NARRATOR In late 1948, after seeing the violence and evil of World War II, the United Nations created the Human Rights Commission. Forty-eight nations signed an agreement that pretty much says, if you’re a human being, you have human rights. MALE NARRATOR Article Two—Everyone has the same rights. FEMALE NARRATOR You have the right to be free and safe. You have a right to not be tortured or enslaved. You have a right to dignity and respect, to be treated like a human being. These people, from all over the world, wrote down thirty rights that everyone should have and called it the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. There are many places in the world, some closer than you might think, where people are enslaved and where torture is a reality. Where children, especially girls, can’t get an education and where women don’t have the same rights as men. Where the color of your skin affects whether you can get a job or where you’re allowed to live. In some places, speaking out against the government or having a different religion can get you arrested … or even killed. This gallery takes a closer look at what human rights are, the importance of the Declaration of Human Rights, and what people like you and I can do to promote and protect the rights of people around the world … and right here at home. MALE NARRATOR Article Thirty—Your rights are yours, and nobody can take them away.
