120 - Bearing Witness - Destroyed Communities

NARRATOR Community is not defined by a place-name or a borderline. It is a living breathing group of people who have lived together… perhaps for generations, building homes, falling in love, worshiping, studying, celebrating, suffering, bearing their children, burying their ancestors—being together at the place they call “home.” In addition to the six million Jews that perished in the Holocaust, 20,000 Jewish communities were destroyed. These communities are gone. Destroyed. Obliterated. Here, however, they are remembered. We are especially interested in destroyed communities that were once the homes of survivors who moved to Houston. Our community thrives and benefits from the energies of those survivors and the stories they share. And, while we mourn the sadness of their loss, we are grateful they and their families enrich our community. Houston survivors brought with them memories and heritage from many communities. And we pledge to remember—with them and for them—the community they left behind.

Holocaust Museum Houston

Holocaust Museum Houston is dedicated to educating people about the Holocaust, remembering the 6 million Jews and other innocent victims and honoring the survivors’ legacy. Using the lessons of the Holocaust and other genocides, we teach the dangers of hatred, prejudice, and apathy.
