56. Eagle

In this museum you can see objects from Berlins’ history. But they are not only inside the building. Some are on the outside. Can you see the large eagle? It has a wingspan of 5.70 metres and weighs half a ton. This bird is over a hundred years old and has his own story to tell. It was created by the animal sculptor August Gaul for the “National-Kaiser-Wilhelm-Monument”. This memorial stood in front of the Berlin Palace from 1897 to 1950. The German Democratic Republic demolished it because they did no longer want a memento for the House of Hohenzollern. But the eagle was rescued and ended up in the museum. If you want to, have a closer look at the outside of the museum before you leave. There is a lot more to discover.

Märkisches Museum

Due to the current circumstances we invite you to take a digital tour through the permanent exhibition BerlinZEIT. The Stadtmuseum Berlin presents at Märkisches Museum a host of artefacts related to the culture and history of the city. A strong level of civic engagement had already led to the foundation of the Museum in 1874. From 1899 to 1908 architect Ludwig Hoffmann designed this first city museum in the world.
