Do you see how my workers pound the glowing metal into shape? They’re building on of our Borsig-locomotives. May I introduce myself? My name is Albert Borsig, my father August founded our engineering company in 1837. Today, in 1868, we produce locomotives for customers all over the world. I wanted to commemorate our family’s success with a series of paintings. For this I commissioned Paul Meyerheim, a renown painter. His task was to tell the story of a locomotive from beginning to end: from the raw materials leading to the production and the final transport. Admittedly, the paintings show an idealised reality. They were made for our family’s Loggia in Moabit, where they need to withstand the changing weather conditions. Which is why they are painted in oil on copper instead of on canvas. Similar to AEG and Siemens, the Borsig company was founded in Berlin during the industrialisation. In this period goods were increasingly produced with machines and in large quantities. The industrialisation profoundly transformed peoples’ lives.
Due to the current circumstances we invite you to take a digital tour through the permanent exhibition BerlinZEIT. The Stadtmuseum Berlin presents at Märkisches Museum a host of artefacts related to the culture and history of the city. A strong level of civic engagement had already led to the foundation of the Museum in 1874. From 1899 to 1908 architect Ludwig Hoffmann designed this first city museum in the world.
