47. Sword

Do you think you could wield that sword? It dates back to the 16th century. And poses a challenge: Only very strong soldiers were able to use it. They were paid double time. Their task was to create a gap in the enemies ranks so foot soldiers could get through. Because of its wave pattern it’s called a Flame-bladed sword. Here in the armoury of the Museum this sword is just one of many objects. The hall was built in 1908 in the Late-Gothic style. Its architect Ludwig Hoffmann designed it to showcase objects from Berlins’ military history. The hall was built with high ceilings to mimic an old court of justice. Because in the Middle Ages the City of Berlin had its own high jurisdiction.

Märkisches Museum

Due to the current circumstances we invite you to take a digital tour through the permanent exhibition BerlinZEIT. The Stadtmuseum Berlin presents at Märkisches Museum a host of artefacts related to the culture and history of the city. A strong level of civic engagement had already led to the foundation of the Museum in 1874. From 1899 to 1908 architect Ludwig Hoffmann designed this first city museum in the world.
