42. Anni Mittelstädt

For our true love we’re on our knees and our true love will always be Berlin. “Trümmerfrauen” did sing that song. They were the woman who helped to clear away the rubble after the second World War. Anni Mittelstädt, was one of over 40,000. After 1945 Berlin lay in ruins. Tons of debris had to be removed by hand, mostly by women. Anni Mittelstädt worked six days a week in all weathers for seven years. In return, she received meal vouchers for herself and her little son. That saved them from starving to death. But for Anni Mittelstädt, her work was also a labour of love. She said: "For my Berlin, I’ve lived, loved and suffered. And I’ve gladly worked for it.“ The women bonded while working in the rubble. They shared a feeling of camaraderie based on their experience. Anni Mittelstädt founded the Club for Berlins “Trümmerfrauen” in 1965. It offered a place to meet and honour the achievements of the women who worked for Berlin. Until her death in 1987, Anni was the heart and soul of the club.

Märkisches Museum

Due to the current circumstances we invite you to take a digital tour through the permanent exhibition BerlinZEIT. The Stadtmuseum Berlin presents at Märkisches Museum a host of artefacts related to the culture and history of the city. A strong level of civic engagement had already led to the foundation of the Museum in 1874. From 1899 to 1908 architect Ludwig Hoffmann designed this first city museum in the world.
