A: Don't you see what's happening? The fire at the Reichstag is just what the Nazis needed. They found their scapegoat and blame the Communists. That’s how it starts: Thanks to the “Reichstag Fire Decree”, Hitler can now imprison anyone at any time. B: What’s your problem? At least things have changed. We’ve got work. My son enjoys his time with the Hitler Youth. And I can afford a holiday in Rügen. I've been better off since the Nazis are in power. A: But others pay the price! Our mutual friend Emil – he disappeared. Only because he was in the trade union. The Nazis took him and his wife and children are desperate. I don't think they'll ever see him again. B: Sshh. If someone hears you, you’ll be next! A: But if we don't say anything, where does this lead to? What will happen? The Nazis used the Reichstag fire as a pretext to abolish basic rights. Soon all parties except Hitler's NSDAP were banned. Thousands of Berliners were arrested and tortured. Among them Communists, Social Democrats, Jews and homosexuals.
Due to the current circumstances we invite you to take a digital tour through the permanent exhibition BerlinZEIT. The Stadtmuseum Berlin presents at Märkisches Museum a host of artefacts related to the culture and history of the city. A strong level of civic engagement had already led to the foundation of the Museum in 1874. From 1899 to 1908 architect Ludwig Hoffmann designed this first city museum in the world.
