24. Forum Fridericianum

A: The building site is gone and I have to say: The square looks impressive. Everything is in perfect harmony: The Library, the Opera and the Prince-Heinrich-Palais. Our young King Frederick really did a great job! B: I agree. But you do know that he actually had much bigger plans?! But it all failed because of the family… A: Oh, really? B: Yes. Frederick's architect Knobelsdorff had planned a huge complex with squares, a new city palace and arcades. A: So I’ve heard. But I thought the ground was too marshy. And any new castle would have sunk! B: Well, that’s the official version! Actually, the King's relatives refused to sell their houses. And the Silesian War started. So it never quite turned out the way Frederick wanted it. A: Nevertheless, Frederick's buildings now give Berlin a new face. And that looks really impressive.

Märkisches Museum

Due to the current circumstances we invite you to take a digital tour through the permanent exhibition BerlinZEIT. The Stadtmuseum Berlin presents at Märkisches Museum a host of artefacts related to the culture and history of the city. A strong level of civic engagement had already led to the foundation of the Museum in 1874. From 1899 to 1908 architect Ludwig Hoffmann designed this first city museum in the world.
