22. Berlin – 1750 model

Impressive, right? I've grown again. Do you see the new palace? The guy who sat there in 1750 really changed me: It was Frederick the Great. Or, as we Berliners call him “Old Fritz”. At first, he established his power in Europe. Thanks to his military, Prussia became a big player. And then Frederick took care of me, Berlin. As his residence, I needed a makeover. Many of the buildings he initiated still stand today. The Prinz-Heinrich Palais is now part of Humboldt University. I tell ya, Life really changed then. Have the courage to use your own mind! That was the idea of the Enlightenment. And Frederick was a great supporter of this movement. Under his rule Berliners could live more freely. He abolished torture, promoted the arts and trade. He really made me more attractive as a city to live in: A lot of people came to me! And they lived in the newly built districts of Friedrichswerder and Dorotheenstadt.

Märkisches Museum

Due to the current circumstances we invite you to take a digital tour through the permanent exhibition BerlinZEIT. The Stadtmuseum Berlin presents at Märkisches Museum a host of artefacts related to the culture and history of the city. A strong level of civic engagement had already led to the foundation of the Museum in 1874. From 1899 to 1908 architect Ludwig Hoffmann designed this first city museum in the world.
