The bells are ringing for this great event! Welcome Ladies and Gentlemen! It is the 18th of January 1701 and we are reporting live from the coronation of Frederick the first King in Prussia. The ceremony takes place in the cold city of Königsberg. You may not see it here, but this ceremony was planned down to the last detail. Frederick is kneeling down. On the pillow in front of him are crown and sceptre: the symbols of his royal status. The coronation mantle lies heavy on his shoulders. One Lutheran and one reformed bishop perform the ceremony: Frederick is anointed with a drop of oil that is spread on his forehead and wrists. Dear Spectators, you can't see it here, but at this point Frederick has actually already crowned himself. He has placed his crown on his head before the anointing ceremony. Afterwards he has crowned his wife Sophie Charlotte. In spring we expect Frederick back in Berlin. There he is currently having his castle rebuilt: after the contemporary Italian Baroque fashion. We are looking forward to his return: It’ll turn Berlin into the residence of a King. How will that change this cosy city?
Due to the current circumstances we invite you to take a digital tour through the permanent exhibition BerlinZEIT. The Stadtmuseum Berlin presents at Märkisches Museum a host of artefacts related to the culture and history of the city. A strong level of civic engagement had already led to the foundation of the Museum in 1874. From 1899 to 1908 architect Ludwig Hoffmann designed this first city museum in the world.
