16. Soldier

Do you smoke? Well, I do. My teeth give it away, you can see the stains. Now, in the war, I’m just one of many smokers. I’m a soldier from Sweden but I will probably never see my home again. I need my clay pipe. Smoking takes my mind off things. There's never enough to eat. Thanks to the tobacco, I feel less hungry. It allows me to forget the horrors of war, all the deaths I’ve seen. Smoking briefly makes it bearable... But now it's almost over. My fever's back. It might be the plague. Some say it’s God's punishment, others blame the poisonous air. Thousands have already died it. I might be next. When I smoke, I can forget about that, if only for a moment.

Märkisches Museum

Due to the current circumstances we invite you to take a digital tour through the permanent exhibition BerlinZEIT. The Stadtmuseum Berlin presents at Märkisches Museum a host of artefacts related to the culture and history of the city. A strong level of civic engagement had already led to the foundation of the Museum in 1874. From 1899 to 1908 architect Ludwig Hoffmann designed this first city museum in the world.
