13. Unwillingness

It has to end now! We are free citizens of Berlin! My gun is loaded, I will defend my rights. The Elector Frederick the Second overstepped. Iron tooth is the right nickname for him. Now he threatens our private property. And he already took the city's freedom! He just annexed parts of it. And it’s not a twin-city anymore. Our property isn’t safe. We no longer make our own political decisions. Yes, now we merchants need to agree with the craftsmen and the Elector on any deal. It's a humiliation. And “Iron Tooth” is building his castle in our city! Let’s take up arms! We have them in the town hall. Let us distribute the guns to reclaim our freedom! We’ll flood the construction site of the Electors’ castle with water from the river! On with it! We will show him! Just under ten of these guns have survived in Europe. Only the cast-iron pipe remains. Berliners used weapons like these during the uprisings of the Berlin Reluctance. However, they were not successful. Frederick the Second prevailed. The merchants had to surrender many of their rights. And Berlin became the permanent seat of the sovereign.

Märkisches Museum

Due to the current circumstances we invite you to take a digital tour through the permanent exhibition BerlinZEIT. The Stadtmuseum Berlin presents at Märkisches Museum a host of artefacts related to the culture and history of the city. A strong level of civic engagement had already led to the foundation of the Museum in 1874. From 1899 to 1908 architect Ludwig Hoffmann designed this first city museum in the world.
