11. Konrad von Belitz.

May I introduce myself: Konrad of Belitz, originally from Belitz but now Berlin is my new home. I am the first Berliner of whom an image still exists today. You're looking right at it. For me, this city is an ideal place for business. Because it’s in the middle of a large trading network. Sorry, I'll be right there. Where was I? Oh, yes: I buy and sell wool, wax, grain. Berlin is also famous for its rye and wood. I make good money with oak boards. They are in demand for ships and houses. I sell my goods as far as Ghent and Utrecht. And borrow money in Hamburg. As a councillor, I am also an active politician in Berlin. As a merchant and politician, Konrad von Belitz shaped the young city of Berlin/Cölln. And he gained the respect of his contemporaries. His burial in the church of the Franciscan monastery indicates that. You can see an image of his tomb stone in front of you. Its Latin inscription reads: "Conrad of Belitz died on May 15th in the year of the Lord 1308. His soul rests in peace. Amen."

Märkisches Museum

Due to the current circumstances we invite you to take a digital tour through the permanent exhibition BerlinZEIT. The Stadtmuseum Berlin presents at Märkisches Museum a host of artefacts related to the culture and history of the city. A strong level of civic engagement had already led to the foundation of the Museum in 1874. From 1899 to 1908 architect Ludwig Hoffmann designed this first city museum in the world.
