Oi, I’m the woolly rhino. Where you're standing today, I used to loot around in the last ice age. Do you see my jawbones? Impressive, right? I eat over 100 kilos of grass a day. That's pretty stressful, because others are after it too. Mammoths, reindeer... It’s a tough life in the steppe. Oi! That’s my place! Get the hell out of here! I don’t mind the cold, ‘cause I got a thick fur. And I'm big: Two meters tall, three and a half meters long. I use my horn to push ice and snow aside. This way I can find edible grass. But now I have such toothache... Enough of the talking: I'm off to Spandau. I heard the grass is greener on the other side… This woolly rhinoceros really needed a vet. His teeth were loose, a sign of periodontitis. You can see the large gaps between tooth and jawbone. That's why it may have starved to death. Woolly rhinos lived in Berlin during the ice age between 100,000 and 30,000 years ago.
Due to the current circumstances we invite you to take a digital tour through the permanent exhibition BerlinZEIT. The Stadtmuseum Berlin presents at Märkisches Museum a host of artefacts related to the culture and history of the city. A strong level of civic engagement had already led to the foundation of the Museum in 1874. From 1899 to 1908 architect Ludwig Hoffmann designed this first city museum in the world.
