08. Ice Age

It's me: Berlin. Yes, my face is from the Ice Age. You don't believe me, do you? Then take a look at the model. That's what I looked like after the Ice Age. Traces from that time can still be found today. Like my Ups and Downs: it goes up to Kreuzberg and down to Wannsee. Glaciers and melt water have shaped my profile. And I’ll tell you what’s interesting about this: like many Berliners, originally, I'm not even from here. I was pushed here underground from the north. Under their thick ice the glaciers dragged along a lot of sand and stones. Then their ice melted. What was left? Only water and sand. And what do you get when you put those two together? Exactly: a swamp! And that’s where I was founded: On two sand islands in the river. The location was good for trade. And that’ s where my name comes from: Berlin means "Place in the Swamp".

Märkisches Museum

Due to the current circumstances we invite you to take a digital tour through the permanent exhibition BerlinZEIT. The Stadtmuseum Berlin presents at Märkisches Museum a host of artefacts related to the culture and history of the city. A strong level of civic engagement had already led to the foundation of the Museum in 1874. From 1899 to 1908 architect Ludwig Hoffmann designed this first city museum in the world.
