The people of Berlin are constantly reshaping my face. How? Well, they spray, they paint, they glue and they paste. And not behind closed doors, oh no! They go for my walls, lanterns and trees. I get rigged with brush, knitting needle or Lego bricks. Some call these acts illegal and a vandalization of public property. While others find them refreshing and think they turn me into a public art exhibition. They call it street art. While Graffiti is mostly writing aimed at a small group, Street Art wants to create something for everyone. That’s why it often uses imagery. Frequently it makes humorous or political comments. For me street art started in the wild east. After the fall of the Wall, there was a lot of blank space for crazy and creative people. Now it's all over town. Artists from all over the world come here to be a part of it. And tourists check it out. No matter what you think about street art: people will always modify my look and I will keep changing.
Due to the current circumstances we invite you to take a digital tour through the permanent exhibition BerlinZEIT. The Stadtmuseum Berlin presents at Märkisches Museum a host of artefacts related to the culture and history of the city. A strong level of civic engagement had already led to the foundation of the Museum in 1874. From 1899 to 1908 architect Ludwig Hoffmann designed this first city museum in the world.
