I, Berlin, am a permanent construction site. You must have heard that about me, right? What can I say? It's true. See the cranes? Keep an eye out for them when you walk through the city. They’re everywhere! Like the building sites. Everyone seems to be digging and drilling. But why? I’m attractive – people just keep coming. So, I need new apartments, schools, streets... And in addition, there are the major projects, like the underground extension or the airport. Right now, the biggest construction site is the so-called "Europecity". North of the main station. This wasteland was once the border between East and West Germany. Now, a new city district is being built there – as big as 40 football fields! Amazing, right? They are building new offices, apartments and business parks. It’s supposed to be finished by 2025. But no matter what – I am sure there will always be a crane in this city. And because there is ongoing change, I will always be a bit of a construction site.
Due to the current circumstances we invite you to take a digital tour through the permanent exhibition BerlinZEIT. The Stadtmuseum Berlin presents at Märkisches Museum a host of artefacts related to the culture and history of the city. A strong level of civic engagement had already led to the foundation of the Museum in 1874. From 1899 to 1908 architect Ludwig Hoffmann designed this first city museum in the world.
