15. Bertus Sondaar - Laina, 1930

This bronze statue of Laina, was made by the artist Bertus Sondaar. You see a portrait of a woman dressed in a loose robe with wide sleeves, with her hands in front of her. In her right hand, she has a flower. A classic beauty. Laina was the artist's favourite model in sculpture classes at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Later in life, when he moved to France, he still kept in touch with her. The work of sculptors such as Bertus Sondaar and Hans Wezelaar in the thirties was the first step towards modern sculpture in The Netherlands. The artists wanted to sculpt modern people and their emotions. Bertus Sondaar's portraits are timeless, using live models to make classic portraits was his speciality. Laina is a good example of this.
