27. Arie Schippers - Catherina de Grote, 2006

Catherine really draws attention to herselve. The sculpture looks heavy, but that is not the case. It is actually made of polystyrene, plaster and epoxy. Arie Schippers, the artist, has given the portrait a finishing touch by using jewellery. Catherine the Great is the Russian czar Peter the Great's wife, and is portrayed as a powerful woman. At the same time, signs of old age and deterioration are clearly visible. The mortality of people in general is so aptly shown by Arie Schippers. As an artist, Schippers is difficult to put into one category, style or movement. As soon as he tried one theme or method, he went on to look for the next challenge. He switches between painting and sculpting, but he also always draws everywhere. His work is usually an exciting combination of observations of reality, and images of his memories or fantasies. In the other room, you can see several of his paintings.
