18. Joop Sjollema -Charles Roelofsz and Herbert Fiedler talking, 1962

In this painting from 1962 you can see two artists, Charles Roelofsz and Herbert Fiedler, talking together. They are both friends of the artist, Joop Sjollema, who was a popular and valued portrait painter. He painted portraits of nearly all his friends. In other rooms in this museum, you can see more of his work. The painting offers us a good impression of his technique and quality as an artist. The posture of Herbert Fiedler, on the left, shows that he is listening and, on the right, Charles Roelofsz is clearly speaking with his hands, and these speaking hands are central to the painting, as they emphasise the dynamics of the conversation. In the background of the painting, one sees typical Joop Sjollema colour combinations of brown red with deep green. The green is mostly painted over with brown red. One can see more of this overpainting in other paintings by Sjollema. Due to his colour blindness, Sjollema saw little difference between a deep green colour and brown red. He often asked his colleagues for help when choosing the right colour.
