19. Theresia van der Pant - Portrait of Ms Henriette Polak, 1972

Theresia van der Pant made this modest portrait of Ms Henriette Polak in 1972. She has sculpted her model to appear realistic. Through this portrayal, you can see what a strong personality Ms Polak had. Henriette Polak founded this museum for Modern Classic Art together with artist Joop Sjollema and his artist friends. It was a reaction to the focus on abstract art which had existed since the sixties. In founding this museum, they gave a podium to art which was executed in the classic manner. Would you like to know more about the life of Henriette Polak? Gather round the table. If you look at the image, it appears sculpted. That's right, Theresia van der Pant first sculpted the portrait from clay, and then it was cast in bronze. Here and there, traces of sculpture are still visible. Van der Pant was commissioned to make this sculpture by the founders of the museum. In her non-commissioned work, the artist has a strong preference for animal shapes. As she said, “animals don't hesitate, there is no shyness”
