MURDER Anthony This stop is the Killing Hollow. This is a good place for me to tell you how I feel about my heritage. Alex This is the spot where 80-year old Irish chief Phelim O’Toole was hacked to death by his English enemies. Anthony The man who ultimately benefitted from his murder was my ancestor: Richard Wingfield, the first Lord Powerscourt. The English Crown gave him O’Toole’s castle and all his lands. The destiny of my family was forever changed. MEMORIES Sarah So how do you feel about Powerscourt today Anthony? Anthony I feel immensely proud of everything that my family has achieved here. Most of earliest and best memories relate to this beautiful place. Sarah So do you remember life in the big house before the fire? AnthonyI remember it vividly. It was a wonderful childhood. Smashing holes in doors whizzing around the kitchens with you Sarah, on a peddle car. Running between the huge rooms of the house as quickly as I could, terrified of the stag-heads and ghosts. Hanging onto my horse ‘Queenie’ for dear life as she galloped up the avenue. And standing beside Jackie Kennedy when she planted a tree to commemorate her visit. They were wonderful times. GOOD NAME SarahSo what do you cherish the most? Anthony The loyalty that existed between my family and those who worked here, which continues to this day. Once a mob arrived during a rebellion to burn down the house. They were driven back by the Powerscourt workers who said these landlords were kind and good. This is very important to me, because a good name is of far greater worth than riches.
