Alex Welcome to Panorama. At this stop I will tell you about my garden team, and some amazing facts about these gardens. THE VISTA SarahThis is the iconic view of county Wicklow. The rocky cone of the Sugarloaf Mountain rises above the ancient deer forests of Glencree. Anthony Nobody expects formal classical gardens in these wild mountains. This view captures the rich contrasts of Ireland’s ancient east. In the background the small tenant farms and the aging stone walls of the ordinary Irish. Alex And in the foreground, the vast pleasure gardens of Anthony’s people, the land-owning Anglo-Irish aristocracy. ALEX’S TEAM Anthony150 years ago my great-great grandparents would have had more than; 50 gardeners, gamekeepers and estate workers to keep it all going. Alex My garden team has just six full-time members including myself, plus two seasonal workers. And we maintain the beech avenue, the gardens, the river walk, and the waterfall. GARDEN FACTS This 1,000 acre estate includes:- 47 acres of landscaped gardens; the longest double flowering borders in Ireland;and over 500 different species of trees and shrubs including the tallest tree in Ireland. Sarah It's the seventh tallest tree in Europe. Alex Look out for the special red signs on our trees. We have over 18 champion specimens from around the world. Anthony The 121 metre Powerscourt waterfall is the highest, and most picturesque in Ireland. Sarah It is certainly the most photographed. Anthony If you turn right here, and head toward the Walled Gardens, we will share some our favourite family stories.
