23. Vincent van Gogh - Terrace of a Café at Night (Place du Forum), c. 16 September 1888

In February 1888, Van Gogh settles in Arles, France. He is delighted about the ‘clarity of the atmosphere and the cheerful colour effects’ he encounters in the South of France. A colourful palette is also what characterises this painting of a lit cafe terrace under a bright starry sky that has the carefree atmosphere of a sultry summer evening.
