Vincent van Gogh met Paul Eugène Milliet in June 1888 in Arles and the two men became friends. Milliet was second lieutenant in the third regiment of the Zouaves, part of the French army. The number three on his collar and cap refer to his regiment as do the crescent moon and star in the upper right corner.
