11. Vincent van Gogh - Four Sunflowers Gone to Seed, August - October 1887
When Helene Kröller-Müller died in 1939, her body was laid out for several days in ‘her’ museum. This painting hung above her coffin. The sunflowers, gone to seed, symbolised the end of her life.
