10. Vincent van Gogh - Girl in a Wood, August 1882

In the summer of 1882 Van Gogh received a financial windfall from his brother Theo. Until then he had mainly made drawings, but now he was able to afford to buy oil paint and to practice using colour. One of the first paintings he made was ‘Girl in a Wood’. He used simple, dark colours: brown, green and yellow. A ‘practical palette with sound colours’, as he wrote to Theo.
