‘Nude Figures in a Wood’ was Fernand Léger’s first large canvas. It pays homage to Paul Cézanne and his theory that nature is made up of three basic forms: the cone, the sphere and the cylinder. The subject also refers to Cézanne, who frequently painted bathers.
