27.Lee Miller and the Second World War

Because of her work as a leading combat photo journalist in the Second World War, Lee Miller was affected by what she had seen and experienced during her travels around Europe at that time. During her time in Dublin, Miller travelled to the coastal suburbs and even spent time at the Fairy Hospital in Howth, which was the site of a hospital set up by Dr. Robert Collis, which tended specifically for young victims of famine and War. It was here that Miller took one of her most arresting images from the trip, of a patient of Dr. Collis’ who had been rescued from a Czech concentration camp. Collis himself was a member of the Red Cross who had been some of the first entrants into these camps at the end of the War.
