26.Post-War Dublin

One of the most fascinating aspects of Miller’s work in this exhibition is her viewpoint of post-War Dublin. This was an era when trams still dominated the wide expanse of O’Connell Street and large turf stockpiles still lined the roads running through the Phoenix Park, the barges were still horse-drawn and much of Dublin was mired in poverty. It was termed ‘The Emergency’ by the government and the effects of the era lasted long after the war ended. Miller’s stark images give us a keen understanding of those challenging times, and depict some aspects of Dublin life that would not have otherwise been documented.
