A large portion of Brancusi’s work distinguishes itself through its abstraction and simplicity. But ‘simplicity’ in itself was not his objective, and neither was abstraction. He wanted his work to permeate to the core. ‘One achieves simplicity despite one's self by entering into the real essence of things,’ he said. People, animals or objects could not realistically portray this true meaning, because that was merely the exterior. And so Brancusi developed his own visual language. He is now considered the founder of modern sculpture.
