The sandy road in yellow, orange and ochre brushstrokes leads to a lake through high trees and alongside a field with sheaves of corn. The green range of hills and a blue mountain side complete the composition. Behind the shrubs a few houses and the chimney of a factory can be seen. Because of the factory it is thought the road did not lead to a lake in real life, but to the Oise River. Cézanne is close friends with Camille Pissarro, who lives in Pointoise. He may have painted this landscape when he visited Pissaro in the summer of 1881. They admire each other’s work and often spend time together painting at the lake.
