Early work on the French translation of Ulysses was done by Auguste Morel, and was added to by Stuart Gilbert with Valery Larbaud acting as arbitrator between Gilbert and Morel, and Joyce overseeing the whole thing. The translation was published on Joyce’s forty-seventh birthday, 2 February 1929, by Adrienne Monnier at her bookshop La Maison des Amis des Livres. A new French translation was published by Gallimard in 2004 under the supervision of Jacques Aubert, using different translators for different parts of the book and even retaining part of the original translation
