The Joyces’ first child, Giorgio, was born in Trieste in July 1905, and their second child, a daughter Lucia, was born in July 1907. Because of Joyce’s constant moving from one place to another, they had an unsettled upbringing. Italian remained the family language but the children also learnt French and English. Giorgio tried to make a career for himself as a concert singer though without much success. He and his first wife Helen Fleischmann had a son, Stephen Joyce, in 1932. Giorgio died in 1976 and was buried with his parents in Zurich. Lucia trained as a dancer but by the early 1930s she began to display signs of mental illness, and was diagnosed with schizophrenia in May 1932. After the war, she was moved to a mental asylum in Northampton in England where she died in 1982. She is buried in Northampton.
