Joyce’s second published book of poetry, Pomes Penyeach, was published by Sylvia Beach at Shakespeare and Company in 1927. The oldest of the poems dates back to around 1903, but most of them were written between 1913 and 1916. Many of the poems contain autobiographical elements, relating to Joyce’s daughter Lucia, his son Giorgio, his partner Nora Barnacle, and also his infatuation with Amalia Popper. The poems were set to music by contemporary composers and published as The Joyce Book in 1933.
