Exiles was performed for the first time in 1919 at the Munich Schauspielhaus in a German translation by Hannah von Mettal, entitled Verbannte, directed by Erwin von Busse. In 1925, the play ran for forty-one performances at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York, but its English premiere was merely two performances in a production by the Stage Society in February 1926. The first production in Dublin was at the Gaiety Theatre in 1948. One of the most successful performances of Exiles was a production directed by English playwright Harold Pinter in 1970.
